Another Resident Targeted In Scam
Yet another resident reported to authorities Monday that she had been targeted in an apparent scam geared toward obtaining residents’ vital personal information.
The victim, age 71, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that she had received a call around 6:00 p.m. from a man who wanted information regarding her bank account.
The victim told deputies that the caller knew her name and the last four digits of her Social Security number. He told her that he needed to know the name of her bank and her account number, “in order for him to give her a new Medicare card.”
The victim provided deputies with a telephone number from which the man called. A check revealed that the call originated in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Deputies noted that the number is associated with individuals who routinely place calls, seeking medical information, banking information, and other personal information from unsuspecting victims.
The victim was advised to notify both her bank and the Social Security Administration of the attempt as quickly as possible.
Investigation into the crime is continuing through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
